SCADA may also be called Human Machine Interface (HMI). SCADA is a process control application which collects data from sensors and machines on the factory floor or other locations and sends it to a central computer for management and control. What Does a SCADA System Consist Of?
A SCADA network consists of Master Terminal Units (MTUs) which operators use to monitor and control a large number of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). The MTU is usually a general purpose computing platform, such as a personal computer, operating SCADA software. The RTUs are usually small, dedicated devices which are outfitted for outdoor use and industrial environments.
What's New In SCADA
Security issues regarding SCADA have been a concern of both private companies and government. The worry is that SCADA systems could be used as a target for a terrorist attack in some way. This concern is currently being addressed by the Department of Homeland Security. They have proposed guidelines for a catalog of security requirements for SCADA systems. These guidelines are known as the Cyber Security Procurement Language for Control Systems. These guidelines will help harden the SCADA systems and increase thier security levels.
